The State Hermitage Museum is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Russian Empress Catherine the Great bought an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. And on 7th December, on Saint Catherine’s Day, the Hermitage museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding. Collections of art were private royal collections. Russian Emperors bought them for their joy. Only in 1852 a little part of the Hermitage museum in Saint-Petersburg was opened to the public. The Hermitage museum is actually a huge museum complex. It is called The Main Museum Complex and is located in the center of Saint-Petersburg, Russia. The Main Museum Complex consists of 5 buildings. The total area of ​​the halls of the Hermitage is over 233 thousand square meters! The exhibition area is 66.8 thousand square meters. The main building is the Winter palace the former royal winter residence. It was built by order of the Empress Elizabeth by the French architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1754-1762, in the Baroque style. Most of the interiors were saved and our guests will be able to see daily life of the Russian royalty. Other 4 buildings are the Small Hermitage, the Old (Big) Hermitage and the New Hermitage. The Main Museum Complex also includes the Hermitage Theater (it’s a small home royal theatre that works nowadays).

 

Interesting fact: In 1997, in honor of the State Hermitage, the minor planet, registered in the International Catalog of Minor Planets under No. 4758, was named Hermitage.
